year, the country estate takes on an unsettling hothouse atmosphere, stoking
Briony’s vivid imagination. Robbie Turner, the educated son of the family’s
housekeeper, carries a torch for Briony’s headstrong older sister, Cecilia,
whom he hopes has comparable feelings; all it will take is one spark for
this relationship to combust. When it does, Briony – who has a crush on
Robbie – is compelled to interfere, going so far as accusing Robbie of a
crime he did not commit. Cecilia and Robbie declare their love for each
other, but he is arrested – and the course of three lives is changed
forever.

exactly pleased to be extracted from his world of video games. However, his
mood quickly changes as he, along with the viewer, is transported to a place
out of time--to Florin, a kingdom in the ultimate imaginary land, complete

clever fairy tale for all ages, THE PRINCESS BRIDE is arguably one of the
funniest and most entertaining films of all time.

Various Artists
20th Century Chamber Music
Saturday February 16 at 8pm in Rosch Recital Hall
Meant to be "user friendly," the recitals will include discussion of the
pieces and demonstration of the performance techniques involved. The second
recital will take place March 15. Because twentieth-century chamber music
reflects a variety of styles, often using fresh compositional techniques,
these programs will span "serious" music's trends by presenting works
ranging from traditional to highly exploratory. Performers will include
Shinobu Takagi, Kay Stonefelt, Tiffany Nicely, Matthew Wilson, Mary Marden
Cobb, Phyllis East, Janet Sung, Maureen Yuen, David Rose, Natasha Farny, and
Mario Falcao. Featured on the program will be "En blanc et noir," by Claude
Debussy, a 1915 work for two pianos. It contains strong classical elements,
a programmatic narrative, one movement based on an octatonic scale -- for
the average listener an unusual set of pitches – and exemplifies Debussy's
highly-sophisticated late writing.
Hitler’s Filmmaker is Focus of SUNY Fredonia Spring Symposium
Leni Riefenstahl, a controversial German filmmaker forever associated with
the Nazi Party, will be the focus of the College of Arts and Humanities
Spring Symposium at SUNY Fredonia. Entitled, "Leni's Legacy: Art, Ethics,
and Propaganda," the series features film screenings, a play, lectures and
question-and-answer sessions during February, March and April. Arrested but
never convicted of committing war crimes, Ms. Riefenstahl died in 2003, just
weeks after her 101st birthday.
Keynote Lecture by Ingeborg Majer O'Sickey
Tuesday February 19 at 7pm in Thompson Hall.
Coolness Factor: Taking the Temperature of Leni Riefenstahl's Aesthetics of
Cool will focus on the ways in which debates over Riefenstahl’s work enter
into current cinematic practice as well as film history, ethics and
censorship. The keynote speaker is Dr. Ingeborg Majer O’Sickey, professor of
German and director of Women’s Studies at SUNY Binghamton, An
internationally recognized scholar of German film and film theory, she is
the author of the 1998 book Triangulated Visions: Women in Recent German
Cinema, and of a forthcoming monograph analyzing the representation of
gender and nation in films of the Nazi era. She is co-editor of Riefenstahl
Screened: An Anthology of New Criticism slated for release in December 2008.
Dr. O’Sickey’s lecture has been made possible by a grant from the
Carnahan-Jackson Fund for the Humanities of the Fredonia College Foundation.
Saakumu Dance Troupe at King Concert Hall
Thursday February 21 at 8pm
Saakumu Dance Troupe is dedicated to introducing audience to traditional and
contemporary African dance and music. (Saakumu) means traditions, and as the

traditional and contemporary cultures with creativity.
“Aunt Raini” at Bartlett Theatre - Thursday February 28, Fridays February 22
& 29,
Saturdays February 23 & March 1 at 8pm, Sunday February 24 at 2pm
The play is based loosely on the life of Leni Riefenstahl, who spent the
early part of her career as the official documentarian of Adolf Hitler and
the Nazi Party. After Aunt Raini’s sudden death, her niece comes into
possession of the propaganda films Raini produced for the Nazi Party. The
niece faces the dilemma of deciding whether great art stemming from evil
should be judged as significant historical artwork or evidence of hate
crimes.
Mark O’Connor at Rosch Recital Hall

appearances at The White House, the Presidential Inauguration Celebration,
and the official ceremonies of Atlanta's Centennial Olympic Games, for which
he composed “Olympic Reel.”

Library Theatre Film Series - Atonement
Friday February 15 and Saturday February 16 at 8pm
Director Joe Wright (Pride and Prejudice) has translated Ian McEwan’s
best-selling roomantic novel into an elegantly forceful film. On a beautiful
English country estate in 1935, privileged 13-year-old fledgling writer
Briony Tallis and her family live a life of wealth and privilege. Robbie
Turner, the educated son of the family’s housekeeper, carries a torch for
Briony’s headstrong older sister Cecilia. When on a stiflingly hot summer
day their relationship blossoms, Briony - who has had a longstanding crush
on Robbie - reacts with hurtful malice by accusing Robbie of a crime he did
not commit and he is subsequently arrested. We meet all three characters
five years later in the thick of World War II, as foot soldier Robbie
prepares for the Dunkirk evacuation and the two estranged sisters train as
nurses in London.

York’s Upper West Side and is almost hit by a car driven by Ross Gardiner, a

reckless driving, and is given a community service sentence of helping Mr.
green once a week for six months. The old man’s wife has just died, he lives
in a fourth-floor walk-up, and he needs help with groceries and such. The
play follows the two men’s growing and changing relationships over several
months beginning with the first of these weekly visits. What starts out as a
comedy about men who do not want to be in the same room together, turns into
a gripping and moving drama as they get to know each other, and open old
wounds they’ve been hiding and nursing for years.

The teacher of the Exploring Art class, Stephanie Cutrona, has been teaching
the class for four years now. Her current class has students aged 14-21,

colored pencils, markers, clay, and papier-mâché. Some projects are Art

Art at the Weeks Gallery - Jamestown Community College
525 Falconer Street –Jamestown
Joann Brennan’s Managing Eden: The New Social Ecology
“My photographs question how we define wildness and how we value nature,”
writes Brennan. “I have documented hunting, habitat manipulation, and animal
research, looking for moments of contact between man and animal. Our impact
on nature and self-imposed stewardship of all that is wild has made our
touch essential to the lives of the animals we have imperiled.”
Timothy Matthew Collins: The World Trade Center: Fallen Bodies
Collins compelling drawings reveal visions that are simultaneously real,
expressionistic, and surreal. Through his sensitive vision and artistic
hand, viewers can feel the energy of the explosions and the final collapse,
the shattering of the architectural elements, the hellish inferno, the smoke
that swallowed the sky, and the emotions that overwhelmed our psyches.
The exhibitions will be displayed through March 12. Gallery hours are 11
a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday; 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday;
and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday. For details on Weeks Gallery programs visit

134 North Second Street - Olean
Harvesting the land and its resources in Western New York and Northern
Pennsylvania to meet growing energy, food, and recreation needs.
Observations of a changing environment. Working in a style he calls
“postmodern expressionism”, Annear’s paintings use color and line to
express emotion and convey energy. Whether creating landscapes, garden
paintings, or political works, he uses these elements to capture the essence
of his subject and subtly reference other painters and art movements. In the
past few years, he has been particularly influenced by the light and color
philosophies of the Sante Fe and California schools of painting.
